EDSS 418 – Development in Adolescent and Emerging Adulthood

The objectives for the class included the following:

  • To study the development of adolescents in the areas listed and to explore ways to foster their healthy and positive development.
  • To examine the health risks often faced by this age group and consider how adults can prevent and address them.
  • To develop a comprehensive picture of traditional and contemporary theories of development; to question the universality of such theories; to see if we can apply the theories to contemporary adolescent experiences (theorize).
  • To understand the values, needs, concerns and interests of this generation of adolescents; to attempt to define “adolescent” in this generation (familiarize).
  • To think creatively and reflectively about issues related to working with adolescents, meaning reconsidering what is “developmentally appropriate” at this age, what all adults in their lives could provide, what teens might need from us.
  • To explore YOUR development as an adolescent, as an emerging adult, and as an adult who hopefully plans to work with teens mostly with the goal of fostering empathy for them).
